Each month in 2022, I walked in Uplands Park, Victoria making quick sketches and notes about colours, shapes, textures, sounds, scents, and changes. I took two photographs from the same two spots each month. I walked under cloudy skies, in summer heat, in pouring autumn rain, and through deep snow. I was bitten by mosquitoes, entertained by cricket and birdsong, calmed by the scent of hot mossy rocks, cooled by summer breezes, and astonished by camas lilies, snowberries, and rose hips. My notes, sketches, photos, and memories (and, sometimes, the GPS maps of my route) of each visit became the basis for a monthly “colour map.” Together, the 12 paintings document the passage of time over the course of a single year in the park. They also document my evolving approach to creating a personal, selective record of walks through one of my favourite ecosystems: the Garry oak meadows of southern Vancouver Island. The title of the series comes from the Cyndi Lauper song, Time After Time.
