Saggar-Fired Stoneware Orb Series

Saggar-Fired Stoneware Orb Series , Fine Art
Saggar-Fired Stoneware Orb Series
Spherical objects have captivated humans over time and figure prominently in objects of beauty, in Neolithic forms, and in the astrological, mystical and paranormal. I find them fascinating to make, handle, and view and believe they relate to the importance of the ever-present sun and moon in our lives. For this series of 8 handbuilt ceramic spheres, each sphere was coated in terra sigillata, and saggar fired in a raku kiln using a variety of metallic oxides, soluble salts and combustibles to capture fumes and markings on the ceramic surfaces.

Inspiration for Series Creation
Beads may be the oldest art form in existence; the earliest beads found date back to 38,000 BC. They hold cultural significance in most historic and contemporary societies. Beads and beadwork have been inextricably linked to women over time. Working with clay I feel a deep connection to my heritage.
