A Study in Black and White -Alternative-Fired Raku Ceramics

A Study in Black and White -Alternative-Fired Raku Ceramics, Fine Art
A Study in Black and White -Alternative-Fired Raku Ceramics
The spherical forms and the black and white raku finishes unify this grouping . One bowl is an example of a crackle white raku glaze with bare, carbonised black areas. Three other bowls, the two orbs, and the ovoid dried flower frog are a study in using the slip-resist "naked raku" technique. All pieces are coated in white terra sigilatta before their raku firing. Though each is unique, these pieces are united in the alternative-fired processes used to finish them. It is meant to capture the black carbon of combustion in the cracks and crevices of each piece and don't rely on the flashy colours and surfaces usually expected in raku ceramics. To me, alternative firing processes are the best example of the collaboration between artist, materials, and environment. They are the most fascinating of all techniques!

Inspiration for Series Creation
Beads may be the oldest art form in existence; the earliest beads found date back to 38,000 BC. They hold cultural significance in most historic and contemporary societies. Beads and beadwork have been inextricably linked to women over time. Working with clay I feel a deep connection to my heritage.
